I immediately felt like a heretic to this calling and love for my own passion. I, like most, find myself caught-up in the world of acknowledgment and need for recognition. A time of immediate gratification and “likes” which really mean nothing at all. I think most of us have an innate want (not to be confused with a need) for recognition and many times this want distracts us from what our hearts initial and intuitive mission might be. Tori and I shared stories of when we were young and praise was not even a blip on the screen. I remember spending long hours in my room as a kid painting and drawing. At the end of the night, I would put down my brush and sleep dreaming of what was visually possible with no intention of even showing my parents what I created. What I created was for me. A burning flame inside that burned for no one but filled me with light and happiness. “Magic” is the story of this internal struggle. The struggle so many artists combat. The song reminded me that every time I look for gratification through recognition I douse the creative flame inside me a bit more. From this came the idea to visually explore the eyes of people, bathed in the shadow which our narcissistic culture feeds us. I wanted to show the light fading and the light returning- insinuating hope and revival. At the end when the tempo speeds up, I imagined a resurrection to a former self. Free of the chains set on use by popular culture and its false and unfulfilling agenda. I hope this song and video helps people look inwards at their passion and remember to feed it for themselves. Always making sure that the byproduct of one living for the now is and always will be more beautiful.
When I first heard the song I felt it was almost a ritualistic anthem. The mid tones of the song have an echoed and encompassing feel much like water. I knew our element had to be that of open ocean. I also felt that the song was a story of initiation of one's soul into something seldom explored consciously. Ultimately, I view the piece as ones need to explore the depths of life and death to truly accept and appreciate what it is we have been gifted. Narrative piece written and directed to showcase the anger and love God has for mankind. Its written to showcase a period 1,000 years after a apocalyptic event took place on a planet similar to earth but in a different dimension. The dimension can be traversed by spirts/angels but organic souls are stuck almost between worlds where magic and madness prevail and life is beautiful but desolate.
